daggerfeet-deactivated20150928 asked: I've been thinking for the last few days about what you said about there being more male planeswalkers because more males play MtG. For ever, basically, women have been disproportionately under-represented in media, largely I think due to the fact that male writers decide incorrectly that men can't identify with a female character, and forget about the rest of their audience. MtG is usually pretty good with portraying women, but the PW gender split reasoning is ignorant. Do sparks discriminate?

There is a lot of scientific evidence that people associate better with people more like them. This isn’t just gender but every attribute across the board. Humans relate better to what they know.

tylorp said: It’s not really that bad considering out of the 18 separate planeswalkers since the cards came out we have 11 guys 6 girls and one robot most fantasy games/stories would be more like 17 guys to 1 girl… maybe.
philbratcher said: There are 5 colors of magic. That means that, from the get-go, one side is going to have more walkers than the other. MtG is the least sexist fantasy game in the market, being one of the only fantasy games that don’t use women as a sex symbol.

prosopagnostic said: @liampk The choice on the part of the creators was to reflect the players, not to have more male than female PWs. In fact, I’ve seen Maro mention that there is a disproportionately high number of female PWs when compared to the playerbase.
liampk said: @podunk. Planes walkers have been described as the most important characters and cards in magic, and yet there are almost twice as many male plans walkers as female ones, and Maro has admitted that this is a conscious choice of the Creators.
podunkthemighty-blog said: I definitely don’t think Magic is sexist. I mean, look at cards like Ash Zealot. It seems like when there’s a human or vampire or whatever that is undefined by gender they’re just as likely to be female than male. They aren’t all Seller of Songbirds.

notheadley said: Guys, less women than men play magic and this has absolutely nothing to do with the number of planeswalkers. No woman is thinking about getting into Magic when they decide they shouldn’t because more than half of the planeswalkers are male.
goibon said: If there are more male planeswalkers then i guess lore wise sparks indeed do discriminate. Unless there’s less women in Magic Land. Or less women being put in situations where their sparks could ignite (bit of a cop out that one).
