ancient-chaos asked: One of the hardest things I find to explain to new (and even some more experienced casual) players is priority. How would you recommend teaching it?
I wouldn’t. At least when you’re explaining the game to someone new. The trick to teaching Magic is to teach as little as you have to. Then as things come up in game play, explain them.
The number one thing that drives people away is a feeling that the game is too complex for them to learn. Your job as a teacher is to break it down into little teachable chunks. Remember, it’s far more important that their first game is fun than they understand everything at the end of it.
Let them seek out answers, don’t force them down their throat. If they play the game partly wrong but are enjoying themselves, there will be time later for them to learn the right way to play. If they play the game completely accurately but aren’t having fun, they won’t play again.
