When design hands off a file to development, does it contain the exact number of cards for the set, or is there an excess to give them some room to manoeuvre?

When design hands over a file, we have a card for each slot. Usually we also have what we call 66’s, cards that have been cut for various reasons but that we like.

Part of development is removing problem cards so the process will naturally make room for newer cards.

I'm not sure indestructible should be an evergreen keyword. Don't you ever find it tricky to explain to a new player how indestructible works and what can and can't get around it?

I don’t feel indestructible should be at common (with rare exceptions) because of some of the confusion but indestructibility is far from the most confusing ability we keyword.

give me a topic using magic: the gathering for a persuasive speech that i can do for 10 minutes to a class who knows nothing about magic :D preferably an argument hat one would take a side on with 3 sources to back it up

All right, since you asked so nicely. How about: Games are to mental health as sports are to physical health. As the workforce has been shifting for years from physical labor to mental labor, games are more important than sports for developing useful employment skills.

Are unblockable creatures considered french vanilla? Same question with indestructible.

In some ways yes and in other ways no. It depends on how it’s being used. One of my goals (so far unsuccessful) is to turn unblockable and indestructible into full-blown keywords to make them French vanilla 100% of the time.

I really need an answer to this, my group and I have been debating this since the first mirodin block came out so please tell us once and for all... Is myr pronounced "mer" like merfolk or "meer" like meerkat?

Meer as in “rhymes with deer”.

"Eighteen Years" → wizards.com

It’s Transformation Week so I chose to talk about an important transformation that’s had a big impact on the game: the transformation of Magic R&D.

I was drafting Innistrad the other day, and realized that, even though I find INN draft difficult, it's really fun to play. It might be my favorite set since I started in Llorwyn. How happy are you guys with Innistrad overall?

Very happy. I believe design, development and creative were all on our A game.

Is there a strict rule that the story of the multiverse must always progress forward or is there a chance we may someday see a block that is a flashback story? I'd love to see a block set in the time of the Thran or in another setting in which we might see Yawgmoth or Urza get depicted as their very own cards.

There are a lot of problems setting sets in the past but we have done it. Urza’s Saga, for example, was a flashback story block. It was set in the past.

In your last article you mention Urza's Saga block as a mistake. Why? I know it was too powerful and broken, but besides that everyone I know loves it and has it in his "all time favorite" with other sets like Ravnica.

Urza’s Saga was a huge developmental mistake as the set was crazy (and I mean crazy) overpowered. That doesn’t mean there weren’t cool designs or fun cards in it.

Really? You guys work on Thanksgiving day?

No, we have Thanskgiving Day off. I just decided it would be fun to do a Thanksgiving day “Tales from the Pit”.

Part 2 of my article on the many graveyard cards, mechanics and sets I’ve designed. (I apologize for posting this late but travel back from Worlds made me forget to post it on Monday.)

What does it take for a vanilla creature to be printed at Rare?

It’s happen numerous times. Alpha had Savannah Lions (2/1). Morningtide had Indomitable Ancients (2/10). Feel free to post any others you come up with.

Will red looting really not always be random or did you just say that because artoskincaid asked you to?

I don’t say things just because people ask me to; not if it isn’t true. We have moved some of looting into red, and left some in blue, and you will be seeing more of it in upcoming sets. (Working ahead means decisions take a while to get to print.) Also we have been trying to find other ways in red to create a chaotic feel without always having to use the word “random”.

About how many of the states have you been too? Any of the missing ones high on your list?

I haven’t counted but I’ve been to somewhere in the mid to high thirties. Alaska is the big one I want to visit but haven’t made it to yet.
